PB&J Smoothie Bowl | Trevor Kashey Nutrition

A thick, creamy smoothie bowl made with frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, peanut butter, and vanilla protein powder that tastes exactly like peanut butter and jelly in a bowl. Ready in 5 minutes with no cooking required, it is a high-fiber, protein-packed breakfast that keeps you full well into the morning.

This protein PB&J smoothie bowl is one of those breakfasts that manages to feel indulgent while still delivering real nutritional value. Frozen blueberries and strawberries blend with peanut butter and vanilla protein powder into a thick, scoopable base that genuinely tastes like the classic sandwich combination it is named after. It takes five minutes from start to finish and requires nothing more than a blender and a bowl.

The key difference between this and a regular smoothie is the texture. Less liquid means a thicker consistency that you eat with a spoon, which feels more satisfying and slows you down in a way that liquid breakfasts often do not. Add your toppings, sit down for a few minutes, and you have a breakfast that actually sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Ingredients

  • Smoothie Bowl Base:
  • 1/4 cup almond milk, oat milk, or milk of choice
  • 2/3 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2/3 cup frozen strawberries, sliced before freezing
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter
  • Optional Toppings:
  • 1 Tbsp melted peanut butter for drizzling
  • Fresh blueberries and strawberries
  • Chia seeds
  • Granola
  • Slivered almonds
  • Shredded coconut

Directions

  • Blend the base. Pour the milk into the blender first. Add the frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, vanilla protein powder, and peanut butter. Blend until completely smooth and thick. The mixture should be much thicker than a drinkable smoothie. If it is not moving easily in the blender, add milk one Tbsp at a time until it just starts to blend, then stop.
  • Pour into a bowl. Spoon or pour the blended base into a wide bowl.
  • Add toppings. If using melted peanut butter, microwave it for 30 to 45 seconds until pourable and drizzle over the top. Add any desired toppings and serve immediately with a spoon.

Pro-Tips

  • Freeze the fruit yourself for the best texture. Store-bought frozen fruit works well, but freezing fresh sliced strawberries and blueberries at home gives you more control over texture and ripeness. Riper fruit is naturally sweeter and produces a more flavorful base without needing any added sweetener.
  • Add the milk first, not last. Putting the liquid into the blender before the frozen fruit helps the blade catch everything and creates a smoother blend from the start. Adding milk last to a blender packed with frozen fruit often leads to air pockets and uneven mixing, which requires more stopping and scraping.
  • Keep the liquid to a minimum for the right consistency. The defining characteristic of a smoothie bowl is its thick, scoopable texture. Use only as much liquid as needed to get the blender moving. Too much and you end up with a drinkable smoothie rather than a bowl you eat with a spoon.
  • Prep smoothie bowl kits to save time on busy mornings. Portion the frozen fruit into individual bags or containers and store in the freezer. In the morning, dump one portion into the blender with the milk, protein powder, and peanut butter and blend. This removes all decision-making from the morning routine and keeps the five-minute prep time realistic every day.
  • Eat the bowl immediately. Smoothie bowls are meant to be eaten cold and fresh. Sitting at room temperature causes the frozen fruit base to melt and the texture becomes watery and thin quickly. If you are adding toppings, have them prepped and ready to go before you blend so you can sit down and eat right away.
